“Stay. There’s still so much to say There’s still so much that is so alive in this old town for you and me” She said “Stay. Stay if you’re going to stay But I can’t face even one more friend going under and away" What can you do? What are you even supposed to say? I said “Oh my love I believe hope will keep this together She said “Oh my love the heart of the city is cold" She said “I know my love you believe hope will keep this together Oh, my love, that’s what I always loved about you most But we are all just bones and ghosts We are all just bones and ghosts We are all just bones and ghosts” She said “How can you say these things? And still pretend that you care?” I said “If you leave, the pain will still find you” She said “if the flames looked good, you would watch your lover burn.” I said “Oh my love I believe hope will keep this together She said “Oh my love the heart of the city is cold She said “I know my love you believe hope will keep this together Oh, my love, that’s what I always loved about you most But we are all just bones and ghosts We are all just bones and ghosts We are all just bones and ghosts”

The Cuckoo 04:08
I remember, when days were long and trees were wet with rain And I loved you I remember, the cuckoo that nested within the roof And I loved you But the war, and the old and stupid circles And the wind through the trees And the cuckoo call I remember, we found the nest the next year eggs unhatched We cleaned it out And I still love you, but that you is gone with the call of the cuckoo I hope you are well But the war, and the old and stupid circles And the wind through the trees And the cuckoo call But the war, and the old and stupid circles And the wind through the trees And the cuckoo call

The sun shone down and it lit your hair like fire Long ago, far away Bright was the day So loud, the singing and dancing in the square All day long, sing the new songs But the rain came over the mountains And the wind came in from the sea And we ran back through gathering gloom Up all the stairs to your room And the bed where we lay Oh bright was the day I swear I don’t remember the reason why I left The years do fade, but my mind still strays After I put the children to bed I guess that I did not believe what you believed To your war! My red-haired warrior! Then men came and blocked off the square Men came with masks on their faces And guns pointed in to the crowd That moved like a wave Then turned into smoke and then drifted away And I watched every night on the news for your face And I find I have nothing to say These days when I hear those songs play Long ago and far away Bright was the day

So I became a lover, and I practiced everything with men and many tearful women I so dilligently sinned But when I showed her all of my conquests and the tricks I could play with her skin she said ‘your love is just a position, your body now, just a mannequin’ So I became a priest, and I took my holy orders To impress her with my faith, and my sacrificial ardour But when I led her in to my church And I laid her over my alter She said ‘it’s no good, for it’s only the love of your God, You are after’ So I became a tyrant, and I brought everyone to their knees And I ruled by fear of violence, and the blood of my family But when I led her up the tallest hill To show her all that belonged to me She said ‘you spend all your time on the revolution And you have no time, you have no time left for me.’ So I became a singer, and I wrote songs of love’s remains And I worked to write that perfect song that would send the angels insane And I played her that song of perfect love And I played it through the pain And when I was done my heart did explode She said ‘that was nice, can you play it again?’ So I became a hero, and a patsy for her to blame And I became a king I became a killer and some treasure for her to claim And I became that moment in her life When she tried to change her name I said ‘it’s no good, I don’t know what do do.’ She said ‘oh my love, try again’

Ruins 04:37
Old white stone work Falling down All tangled up in the grass and dust Bright in the sunlight Cold in the rain This was not meant to last This was not meant to last But still, after all, look what is still here Broken plates On the floor No-one to pick them all up this time Bright in the passion Cold in the tears This was not meant to last This was not meant to last But still, after all, look what is still here Look what is still here Sift through the embers of the fire Wade through the waters of the flood Here in the ruins of it all Here we will be together Here we will be forever

Once I had a lover who had long brown hair down to her toes She wrapped her hair around my head to keep the shadows out The season came, but oh the shame, the shadows were inside The season changed, as all seasons changed Though she loved me so She left me even though Once I had a lover who would break the things she loved the most She broke them so that she show her love by fixing them The season came all bathed in flames I wore my bruises well The seasons changed as all seasons changed Though I loved her so I left her even though And these seasons come and go I don’t know why Sometimes I get so lost in the memories Af all those seasons that go by so sweet and low All my lovers who know me better than I know myself Tell me it’s enough To have loved, and to have been loved And to let the seasons go Once I had a lover who would always wear her lovers’ clothes Once I had a lover who did dream she was her lover’s ghost Once I had a lover who thought highs were lies between the lows Once I had a lover who would sleep so close our mouths would kiss Sometimes I get so lost in the memories Of all those seasons that go by so sweet and low All my lovers who know me better than I know myself Tell me it’s enough To have loved, and to have been loved And to hold the seasons close And to let the seasons go

When the pill has worn off and the buzzing’s died down And the room could be any old dark room in the town And you leave all the dancers to the bang of the drum Out to the night air And it's out to the bouncers and the smell of old skunk And it's out past the drunks til you’re on your own And there won’t be a bus til you’re already home So you started walking And the street looks like a movie with your earphones on You smile to yourself as it plays the next song And it’s some stupid crap you forgot you had owned And you started singing along You started singing along Walking all the way back home Walking all the way And I hope you found some peace at last And I hope you found some peace at last You were walking all the way You were walking all the way back home You round to your road as the sun’s coming up It plays the last song take your earphones out And you listen to birds and the sounds of the day Then up to your room again Up to your room again walking all the way back home walking all the way And I hope you found some peace at last And I hope you found some peace at last You were walking all the way You were walking all the way back home

Outside was thick with darkness A deeper dark within Fire over the sea And fire again beneath He came in from the outside Darkness caked to his cloak He said “I am dead. You killed me long ago Listen! Listen! I will tell a story Gather closer in And when your brother called for you And when your sister screamed You turned your backs on them You closed your doors to me When your bones become the earth And your blood becomes the sea When your screams become the wind Then you will call for me. Save me all your empty protestations Soon the end will come: The knife, the noose, the gun Enjoy the night, before the light sweeps hard across the bay And maybe if you say your prayers, maybe you’ll be saved Drink your wine, sing your rhymes and dance the night away For soon comes the day Soon comes the day.” And they all turned their backs on him And so he turned to me, said: “What do you think? Buy me a drink? The night still lies ahead Oh my only friend we’ll raise our glasses To whom shall we toast? The great? The grave? Or the ghost? Enjoy the night, before the light sweeps hard across the bay And maybe if you say your prayers, maybe you’ll be saved Drink your wine, sing your rhymes and dance the night away For soon comes the day Soon comes the day”

So long dear friend So long my dear old friend This world is not for the best This world is only for those of us left Behind So long dear friend So long my dear old friend And soon for me too my friend You always went ahead of me Ahead of me But still we had the water underneath the moon In December, and the snow in June Dear friend, dear friend Ever the end, ever again All of me now, all of you now All of our time, memories now All of me now, all of you now All of our time, memories now And now I must go to those above who turned this world to ash Dear friend, dear friend So long my dear old friend

My time and a bottle of wine They’re mine to do with as I please Oh sir! Don’t play the chider! My time and a bottle of wine They’re mine to do with as I please Don’t get me wrong, sir! I’ll share a glass with you As we get older, less time for running now Who’ll look back fonder, now that the running’s done? My time and a bottle of wine Join me or go in peace One bottle, two glasses, three cheers, four all! All good things will come in time, and wine So leave off your tricks and ploys, And all your endless noise Run your race or take a place: your choice Run your run or stay a while But for god’s sake stop your moaning now Some time and sometime all will come in time My time and a bottle of wine They’re mine to do with as I please Oh sir! Don’t play the chider! My time and a bottle of wine Join me or go in peace!
